Job Description: Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual with the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary cotton breeding research team in Costa Rica. The RA will primarily be responsible for assisting in managing breeding nurseries within a multi season nursery. Major responsibilities will include supervision of specific breeding objectives, pre-planting preperations, field plot maintenance, data collection, sampling and harvesting. The RA will interact with other research personnel, including scientists in the breeding, breeding technology and biotechnology organizations as well as interact with the site matrix. The incumbent will work in conjunction with site administration on recruiting, training, and developing temporary personnel. He or she will ensure that company assets are well-cared for and properly maintained. Additional responsibilities include interacting with scientists and breeders on and off-site for project-related needs, participating in task-related document creation and process review for job-related activities and overall safety of the site. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
Required Skills: Required: 1. MSor BS in Agronomy, Plant Breeding or related field and three or more years of appropriate work experience. 2. Individual leadership skills including excellent organizational and record keeping skills. 3. Effective verbal and written communication skills. 4. Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheet programs, and ability to learn and implement proprietary and other software. 5. Demonstrated ability to write and speak fluently in English and work in interdisciplinary teams. 6. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary/multicultural cotton research team. 7. Valid Driver's Licence. Desired: 1. MS in Agronomy, such as in Plant Breeding with 5 years of experience 2. General knowledge of Molecular Biology and genetics. 3. Knowledge of crop production, farming practices, and farm equipment operation and repair. 4. Working knowledge of statistics and experimental design. 5. Proven leadership and organizational skills. 6. Demonstrated an ability to write and speak fluently in English and work in interdisciplinary teams. 7. Be highly self-motivated, detail oriented, and innovative. Some international travel required mostly for training, meetings or collaboration. Willingness to work extended hours if project objectives require it.
