Job Description:
Monsanto is seeking a highly motivated individual to become an integral member of our Cotton Breeding Team in Canas Costa Rica. The successful candidate will have responsibility for day to day operations at the Canas Costa Rica, cotton research station. Administration of the Station includes the recruiting, training, development and retention of permanent and temporary personnel as well as budget and capital project management. Key responsibilities are to ensure that the research team is trained in all ESH procedures for safe operation of the research program, to acquire and maintain adequate facilities and equipment for effective and efficient program function, and to oversee a breeding program which will lead to the development of improved Cotton varieties. The incumbent will primarily focus on crop organizing, planting, crop metrics measuring, harvest and all post-harvest cotton processing as well as record information on new experimental processes and procedures for global cotton breeding. The incumbent will maintain site responsibility partnerships to ensure efficient work flow and work load balancing and most importantly abide by cotton breedings matrix roles and responsibility in Costa Rica.

The incumbent will be a key member of the cotton breeding team, and will need to communicate regularly with Global Cotton breeders and Global Managers. Therefore the successful candidate needs to have outstanding organization and communication skills and must be proficient in Microsoft Office computer programs. The incumbent will need to persevere in obtaining results, act in an ethical manner in all business transactions (in compliance with Monsanto's code of business conduct), and maintain a high level of confidentiality with sensitive information.

Required Skills:
Qualifications/Competencies:

  • BS in Plant Breeding Agronomy or related field with 8+ years of agricultural research/project experience
  • Five or more years experience as a people Manager to enable management of all day-to-day Site operations
  • Broad knowledge of crop production and farming practices as well as farm equipment operation and repair
  • Ability to accurately forecast and manage budgets and capital expenditures
  • Be a self-starter with Team leadership skills including excellent organizational and record keeping skills, and the ability to foster a positive Team environment
  • The ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic statistics and experimental design principles
  • Computer skills related to data acquisition and analysis. Working knowledge of Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • To be a member or to have all the requirements to be certified by the Board of Agronomy of Costa Rica so the incumbent can work under Costa Rica law

    Desired Skills/Experience:
  • MS in Plant Breeding, Agronomy or related field of study with 3+ years of significant people and project management experience in an agricultural-related research position.
  • Good working knowledge of statistics and experimental design
