Job Description:

  • Ensure the development of improved maize inbred lines and hybrids utilizing the latest breeding technologies for the South African market.
  • Collaborate with other Breeders to conduct a research program including population development, selection, the operation of summer and winter nurseries and involvement in the hybrid testing program.
  • Contribute to recruitment, training, development and retention of staff as well as budget management and care and maintenance of company assets.
  • Remain up to date with the technical advances pertaining to advanced breeding techniques.
  • Ensure that the research team is trained in all ESH procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Travel to trials within South Africa. Some international travel will also be required.

    Required Skills:
  • PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics or MSc in Plant Breeding or
  • Plant Genetics or related field with 5+ years plant breeding experience
  • Strong background in plant breeding, genetics, field plot technique and statistical analysis, molecular biology and molecular marker applications.
  • Experience in maize breeding is preferred.
  • Proven track record in a commercial corn breeding program, strong knowledge of modern technical approaches to germplasm improvement.
  • Proficient in the applications of molecular marker technology to applied plant breeding.
  • A solid track record of innovation and process improvement in an applied breeding program
  • Proficiency with database applications, MS Excel, experimental design, and statistics are required
  • Must be in possession of a valid South Africa/Internantional driver's license
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential to this role.
  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to thrive in a team based work environment.
  • Must be highly self-motivated, detail oriented, and innovative
  • A strong results orientation and good organizational ability are essential
  • Must be willing and able to do field work
