However, are selection practices for these two types of candidates that different? This session’s guest presenter will dive into that question and share best practices in selection overall and then some specific key tactics to enhance the selection process for both entry level and experienced talent. The presenter will share thoughts on tools and technology that are available to assist with selection, such as assessment tools. The guided panel of students will highlight what skills they think they bring to the table, but also those that they wished they would have known going into their first job. They’ll discuss what perks and benefits they’d like to have offered and why. And we’ll also talk about what they think companies and educational institutions are getting wrong and right! To conclude the session, we’ll open it up to the audience and let participants ask the questions! | | 12:00 - 1:45 pm | Lunch | | 1:45- 3:00 pm | Concurrent Sessions - Series 1 Track 1: University & College Focus Beg, Borrow, and Share -- University and College Career Services Discussion Going back to the roots of the Roundtable, this session is just for university and college careers services participants. During this session a guided question and discussion period will allow participants to share and brainstorm ideas to overcome some of the obstacles of the role, such as getting more students to use career services; gaining employer involvement; creating synergy with faculty; and handling the influx of displaced alumni. This session is meant to be a true sharing of ideas. Track 2: Recruiting Focus Breaking the Mold: Selling Candidates that Don't Fit Many recruiters for organizations are working with a manager who may or may not be open to considering talent that doesn't fit all of the criteria. As recruiters, we know that there are many candidates that would be excellent employees even though they do not fit the mold. For example, someone with excellent sales experience, but no agriculture background. Or a student athlete that lacks internship experience. Or a science student with no extracurricular activity involvement. Whatever the situation, this session will share ideas on how you can help managers overcome their narrow vision. Track 3: HR Practices Focus Recruiting and Integrating Immigrant Talent into an Organization As companies broaden their borders or consider immigrant talent to fill a void, how you recruit and integrate that talent into the organization can make all of the difference in the organization's success at doing so. This session will share specific ideas and needs that immigrant talent consider when seeking employment in a foreign country. From embracing and involving family to rewards and recognition, the guest presenter will provide some simple and implementable ideas for improved success and increased retention of this workforce. | | 3:00 - 3:30 pm | Break | | 3:30 - 4:45 pm | Concurrent Sessions - Series 2 Track 1: University & College Focus An Employer's Student Wish List This session will feature a small panel of employers to share thoughts and feedback on what they wished their students knew coming into their internship or first job. Geared toward ways and topics that academia can help better ready students for the work world is the main goal of this session. During the session, we'll also look at the differences in two and four year students. While the panel will be guided, this session will allow for discussion and exchange of ideas to really develop some concrete ideas and examples of how academia and employers can work together to prepare students for the life-changing transition to employment! Track 2: Recruiting Focus Filling a Void - Recruiting at 2-Year Schools Skilled labor and certain positions have become harder to fill and have higher demands. Finding talent with these interests at universities can prove challenging. However, two-year schools and colleges are a great resource for providing students that have the needed skill sets. Connecting with students on these campuses can be more difficult, but this session will provide ideas on how employers can successfully make this connection with both faculty and students. Participants will have time to brainstorm and share ideas as well as ask for advice from our guest presenter. Track 3: HR Practices Focus Retention Strategies for Success As the economy begins to rebound, predictions are that movement of employees will also increase. How can employers retain their best talent and develop practices that will help keep those employees that you want, but not those that you don't. The guest presenter of this session will share the 'old standbys' that still work and new unique ideas that have an impact. Topics of discussion include benefits / recognition, on-boarding, mentoring, and employee engagement. The session will offer formal presentation, but also an opportunity to share and discuss as a smaller group. | | 4:45 - 5:00 pm | Closing Comments | | 6:00 - 9:00 pm | Networking Dinner | | August 4, 2010 | | 7:30 – 8:30 am | Optional Breakfast Become a Social Media Guru No, not your typical social media session! This optional breakfast will not cover the pros and cons of using social media. This session is for those that want to learn more about strategic ways to use social media and how to do so. Learn what other companies both inside and outside of the industry are doing to enhance their online presence and walk through how to act upon some of those examples. Don’t miss your opportunity to learn from two social media gurus, so you yourself can become a guru too! Breakfast will be served. *RSVP is required to participate. | | 9:00 - 9:15 am | Opening Comments | | 9:15 - 10:15 am | Human Resources for a Flat World Continued expansion in global markets within the agriculture industry has created a more prevalent need for a global human resources approach amongst an expanding number of companies within agriculture. During this session, learn from one organization who employs an international workforce and best practices for doing so. From creating the processes to facilitate such a structure to dealing with differing international regulations, this case study approach will provide insight for those that work internationally or are considering doing so. | | 10:15 - 10:40 am | Break | | 10:40 - 11:40 am | The Government's Impact on Human Resources Practices Anticipated alterations to healthcare and other political moves can have a major impact on organizations and their employees.
